Dorm Room Decorating Ideas

Decorating a dorm room is like decorating your first apartment. While attending college, this small space will be working overtime, serving as a study area, living space, kitchen and bedroom. You will spend lots of time in this space, so you want to create a space that is cozy and inviting. A dorm room is the perfect place to interject your personality and interests on display. The dorm room will start off as a plain, utilitarian space so you are limited with your decorating options. Here are some ways to easily transform the space into something that is uniquely you:

Rugs: Even if your dorm room already has carpet--adding an area rug can help define the space and add some color. It is probably better to go with a darker color with a pattern to help disguise any spills or stains. This rug, available at Ruggable, is a cool mix of grey with a pop of yellow. And here's a bonus, the rugs available from Ruggable are machine washable.

Decorate the walls: If painting is not allowed, there are other ways to decorate the walls in your dorm. It is important to recognize that this is a temporary space, so anything that you put up should easily be removed without damaging the walls. Use command strips to hang up pictures or posters. You can use vinyl stick on words and shapes, or try to buy removable wallpaper. Or you could create a collage created with posters, pictures and other unique d├ęcor items on your wall.

Pillows: Pillows are an opportunity to go crazy with color and pattern. A lot of pillows are sold as covers with an insert, so it makes them easy to clean and also change. You can bring in some personality into your space with an inspirational pillow, like this one from Red Bubble. Add some larger pillows to use to lounge on the floor or to accommodate guests.

Lights: Lights are a great way to add some personality to your space for not a lot of money. I’m not talking about desk lamps or anything boring like that, I'm thinking string or globe lights. Using these in your space will instantly add sparkle and shine. You can line the ceiling, drape them at the head of your bed or just make some wall art with them. Although its not functional lighting, it can create ambient light which is fun!

Storage:  Inexpensive storage ideas, like the cubes in the picture above, are great for books and you can add baskets for clothing and accessories.

Enjoy these decorating ideas and Happy Decorating!
